Productive Pedagogies

The Productive Pedagogies exercise was particularly useful for me to grasp an understanding of the twenty "productive pedagogies". By considering each of the productive pedagogies before creating a short learning sequence, I was able to create a learning sequence which was engaging and pedagogically sound for year 3 students.

Furthermore, this exercise allowed me to gain further understanding of the productive pedagogies by applying them to a real life scenario. As studies have shown, one of the best ways to learn is by doing:

The learning sequence I chose was to teach year 3 students how to do their 9 times tables. This is something I remember learning from my year 3 teacher, Mrs Lane.

Below is a copy of my learning sequence and the links between each activity to the practical pedagogies.

I think this particular execise was very effective because it, in itself, utilised a number of the productive pedagogies.

Some (but not all) of the productive pedogies that were evident included:
  • I had to partake in higher order thinking to create a learning sequence which used the productive pedagogies;
  • The exercise showed connectedness to the real world. I am sure I will frequently revisit and consider the productive pedagogies when developing lessons during my teaching career;
  • I had to use a lot of my own self-regulation and student directions to complete this exercise; and
  • Narrative was also evidenct in respect of the learning sequence I had to create.
Overall I think this exercise was great for allowing me to learn the productive pedagogies.
